When you’re buying a new vehicle—especially a high-end or exotic vehicle—you expect the paint to actually be new car paint, untouched, and defect-free.
Unfortunately, that’s not always what we see.
Recently, a client brought us a Bentley with a significant paint defect that most buyers probably wouldn’t have noticed during a normal walk-around at the dealership.
Under proper inspection lighting, the problem became obvious: someone had used a DA sander on the paint and failed to properly polish the sanding marks afterward.
The first photo shows what we discovered. The second shows the area after we corrected it.
That’s not something you expect to find on a vehicle of this caliber—but it illustrates exactly why a professional paint inspection before purchasing or accepting delivery can be so valuable.
“New” Doesn’t Always Mean Perfect
A new vehicle can go through a surprising amount before you ever receive the keys.
It may be transported by truck or rail, stored outside, washed numerous times, handled at multiple facilities, or repaired because of damage that occurred somewhere along the way.
Dealerships may also perform paint correction, wet sanding, spot repairs, polishing, or bodywork before the vehicle reaches the customer.
That doesn’t automatically mean there’s something wrong with the vehicle. Minor corrections are sometimes necessary.
The problem is when the repair creates another defect—or hides a larger issue the buyer doesn’t know about.
In the case of this Bentley, sanding itself wasn’t necessarily the problem. Sanding is a legitimate paint-correction technique when performed correctly.
Leaving behind obvious DA sanding marks certainly is.
Some Defects Are Almost Invisible in Dealership Lighting
This is where things get tricky.
A vehicle can look beautiful sitting inside a showroom and tell an entirely different story once we put professional inspection lights on it.
We regularly look for things such as:
- Sanding marks and pigtails
- Swirls and holograms
- Deep scratches
- Paint overspray
- Evidence of repainting or spot repairs
- Uneven texture or finish
- Areas that have been aggressively polished
- Unusual paint-thickness readings
Some of these issues may be relatively simple to correct. Others could indicate previous damage or a repair that deserves further investigation.
And that’s something you probably want to know before signing the paperwork—not afterward.
That’s Why Detail Solutions Auto Spa Can Inspect a Vehicle Before You Buy It
If you’re considering purchasing a new, luxury, exotic, or high-value vehicle in the Central Florida area, Detail Solutions Auto Spa can help inspect the exterior finish before you take delivery.
We’re looking at the vehicle from a professional detailer’s perspective.
Using proper lighting, paint inspection techniques, and when appropriate paint-thickness measurements, we can help identify defects that may be difficult to see during a typical dealership walk-around.
We’re not replacing a mechanical pre-purchase inspection or a body shop. Our specialty is the condition of the paint and exterior finish.
And after years of correcting vehicle finishes, we know what to look for.
A $200,000 Vehicle Can Have Paint Problems Too
One of the biggest misconceptions is that expensive vehicles leave the factory or dealership with perfect paint.
They don’t.
We’ve worked on everything from daily drivers to Rolls-Royces, Porsches, Corvettes and other high-end vehicles, and the badge on the hood doesn’t guarantee a flawless finish.
In fact, the more you’re spending on a vehicle, the more sense it makes to know exactly what you’re buying.
Finding a defect before delivery gives you options.
You may be able to ask the dealer to address it, negotiate accordingly, request additional information about what happened, or simply decide whether you’re comfortable accepting the vehicle in that condition.
Once you’ve taken the vehicle home, that conversation can become considerably more difficult.
Protect Your Investment Before You Protect the Paint
Many customers contact us immediately after purchasing a vehicle because they want paint correction and ceramic coating.
We’d love to take that process one step earlier.
Call us before you take delivery.
We can inspect the paint, document what we find, and help you understand the condition of the vehicle’s finish before it becomes yours.
Then, once you know you’re starting with a vehicle you’re happy with, we can correct the paint if necessary and protect it properly with a ceramic coating.
The Bentley in these photos is a perfect example.
What initially looked like a beautiful vehicle had sanding damage hiding in plain sight. Fortunately, we were able to properly correct the area and restore the finish.
But imagine knowing about it before you bought the car.
